Building permits in Bridgeport are administered by the City of Bridgeport Building Department through the Park City Portal.
State code and local process
Connecticut uses a statewide building code. The 2022 Connecticut State Building Code applies to permit applications filed from October 1, 2022 and is based on the 2021 I-Codes, with the 2020 NEC and Connecticut amendments. Bridgeport's Building Department applies that state framework together with applicable local zoning and ordinances.
Bridgeport requires a building permit for work including new buildings, enlargements, alterations, repairs, demolition and changes of occupancy. The City's permit page also specifically identifies decks, swimming pools, fences exceeding 7 feet, and retaining walls over 3 feet among work requiring a building permit.
The City's exemption page, quoting State Building Code Section 105.2, identifies examples including one-story detached accessory structures not greater than 200 square feet, qualifying fences not over 7 feet, and qualifying retaining walls not higher than 3 feet. Other permits or approvals may still be required even when a building permit is exempt.
Applying
Applications are submitted through Park City Portal. Bridgeport states that building-permit applications also require a zoning plan and that documents are submitted in PDF format. Design-professional seals and signatures are required where the 2022 State Building Code requires them; they are not treated here as a universal requirement for every project.
Permit validity
Bridgeport's published FAQ states that a permit becomes invalid if authorized work is not commenced within 180 days of issuance or is suspended or abandoned for 180 days after work starts, subject to written extensions allowed by the code.
