Building Permits in New Haven

New Haven's Office of Building Inspection and Enforcement administers residential and non-residential construction permits and inspections under state and local codes.

Current state code

The 2022 Connecticut State Building Code applies to permit applications filed from October 1, 2022. It is based on the 2021 IBC, IEBC, IPC, IMC, IRC, IECC and ISPSC, the 2020 NEC, and Connecticut amendments. New Haven administers permits within that statewide framework together with local zoning requirements.

Electronic permitting

New Haven states that construction permits can be applied for online at any time through its City Squared electronic permitting system and that paper applications are not accepted for this process. The Building Department also provides online permit-information access.
