Building Permits in West Palm Beach

The City of West Palm Beach Building Division administers building permits. The City uses Civic Access for permit and inspection information.

Codes and permits

Florida's 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code has been effective since December 31, 2023. Local administrative and zoning requirements can also apply.

The City specifically confirms that replacement windows and doors require permits. It also distinguishes minor work: painting and flooring in a house do not require a building permit, while flooring replacement in an apartment or condominium does require one. Do not extend those examples to other work without checking the City.

Fees

West Palm Beach directs applicants to the Civic Access fee estimator. Its FAQ publishes minimum combined plan-review and permit fees of $105 for project value up to $1,000 and $130 up to $2,500, excluding Fire Department or Zoning fees that may not apply to every project. Larger projects increase with valuation. Use Civic Access for the current project-specific estimate.

Inspections and completion

The City directs applicants to Civic Access for scheduled inspections and inspector information. Required inspection types are attached to permit scope; the City advises contacting the relevant chief inspector if the needed inspection is unclear. Final approval and a certificate of occupancy apply where required.
