Current codes
LCG's current adopted-code page lists Louisiana's 2021 IBC, 2021 IRC, 2021 IPC, 2021 IFGC, 2021 IMC and 2021 IEBC, with state amendments where applicable, plus the 2020 NEC. The Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council likewise identifies the 2021-code adoption and subsequent state amendments as the governing framework.
Permit scope and exemptions
For residential work, LCG says permits are required for single-family dwellings, duplexes and almost any associated structure. It expressly identifies an exemption for a detached residential playhouse or shed no larger than 200 square feet on a movable foundation, subject to development/setback rules. For commercial work, LCG lists examples including fences not over 7 feet, one-story detached movable-foundation sheds 120 square feet or less, and certain retaining walls not over 4 feet as exempt from the building permit, while other development requirements may still apply.
Design and occupancy
LCG states that metal, pre-engineered and pole-building construction requires a permit, floor plan and engineered stamped plans including wind-load certification; it does not extend that requirement to every project. A certificate of occupancy can be applied for through the Permitting Division for an existing commercial space where no construction is required.
