Building Permits in Dayton

Dayton's Division of Building Inspection administers construction permitting and applies Ohio's state building-code framework.

Dayton's current official code page identifies the 2024 Ohio Building Code for commercial structures, 2019 Residential Code of Ohio for residential structures, 2024 Ohio Plumbing Code, 2024 Ohio Mechanical Code, 2024 Ohio Existing Building Code, 2023 NEC, 2017 Ohio Fire Code, 2017 IECC and 2015 IFGC. Applicants should check the City's current page because code editions change on different cycles.

Applying

Dayton publishes separate applications for building, mechanical, fire alarm/suppression, demolition and other permit types. As of the City's current Online Permit System page, the online system is limited to checking permit status; applicants are directed to the City's permit forms for applications. This guide does not claim online application functionality that the City says is not yet available.

Fees and timing

Permit requirements and fees depend on project type and scope. Dayton does not publish one universal plan-review duration on the cited general permit pages, so no generic timeline is supplied here.
