Building permits in Cranston are administered by the city's Department of Building Inspections & Zoning. Rhode Island has a statewide building-code system. When a permit is required
Cranston states that permits are required to construct, enlarge, alter, remove or demolish a structure, to change a building from one occupancy use group to another, and to install or alter equipment regulated by the building code.
The city recognizes an ordinary-repair exemption, but expressly limits it. Work is not treated as an ordinary repair when it includes, among other things, installing siding; cutting or removing structural walls, beams or bearing supports; changing required means of egress; specified plumbing, electrical or mechanical work; roofing repairs greater than 100 square feet; or replacement windows. Work exempt from a building permit can still be subject to zoning or other requirements, so the department should be consulted for the specific project.
