Building Permits in Denton

Adopted Codes

Applying and Inspections

Denton's eTRAKiT portal supports permit applications, application status, fee payment, and inspection requests. The city uses the portal for structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and final inspection scheduling.

A Verified Exemption

For accessory structures, Denton states that a building permit is not required for qualifying one-story detached tool/storage sheds, playhouses, and similar structures when the floor area is 200 square feet or less and the structure has no utilities. Zoning and land-development requirements still apply.

Certificate of Occupancy

Denton requires a Certificate of Occupancy for specified commercial situations including new businesses and certain changes in use, business name, or ownership. The city separately states that it does not issue a CO for new residential construction or residential alterations after final inspections; the Final Inspection Report is used as proof of completion.
