Grand Prairie's Building Inspections Division administers construction permits. Applications are available through the City's online Customer Self-Service (CSS) portal.
Current codes
Grand Prairie's current permit pages identify the 2021 IBC, IRC, IPC, IMC, IFGC and energy code together with the 2023 NEC, with applicable local/NTCOG amendments. The City states that new residential and new commercial construction requires an approved permit regardless of size.
Design-professional requirements
For new commercial buildings, the City specifically states that engineer seals/signatures are required on structural, electrical, plumbing and mechanical plans for buildings larger than 5,000 square feet, and on structural plans regardless of size for metal buildings. This project-specific rule is not generalized to every permit type.
Fees and review
Grand Prairie publishes its current fee schedule and accepts official permit payments through CSS, in person or by mail; the City warns that it does not accept wire transfers for building permits. Review time varies by application type. Where individual permit pages publish a 5–10-business-day processing estimate, that estimate applies only to those permit types and is not presented as a citywide deadline.
