West Jordan Building Permits — Requirements & Process

West Jordan's Building & Safety Division provides plan checking, permitting, and inspection services for new construction, additions, remodels and alterations, and demolitions. Building-permit applications are submitted through the City's online Public Portal.

Applications and Review

The City's permit portal guide instructs applicants to choose Building & Safety, select the applicable permit category, complete the required fields, attach plans, and submit online. The same current guide says to allow up to 10 business days for the initial review of residential projects by Building and Planning, when applicable. That published timeframe is specific to the City's residential guidance and is not generalized here to commercial projects.

After issuance, approved stamped plans are available through the portal. Inspections are also scheduled through the portal by a listed point of contact.

Current Codes

West Jordan's current design criteria lists the 2024 International Building Code, 2021 International Residential Code, 2024 International Plumbing Code, 2024 International Mechanical Code, 2024 International Fuel Gas Code, 2023 National Electrical Code, 2024 International Energy Conservation Code, and 2024 International Existing Building Code, with applicable Utah amendments. Utah Code §15A-2-103 effective July 1, 2026 likewise identifies the statewide adopted editions and amendments that govern construction.

Fees

West Jordan's consolidated fee schedule effective through June 30, 2027 publishes building-permit, inspection, plan-review, processing, and related charges. Building permit fees can depend on valuation and permit type, while plan-review rates vary by project category. Use the current schedule for the actual project rather than a generic percentage copied from another jurisdiction.

Completion and Occupancy

West Jordan publishes project-specific closeout requirements. For example, its site-plan guidance states that a permanent certificate of occupancy is issued after applicable Building Division requirements are met. Because requirements differ by project type, this guide does not turn that guidance into a universal inspection sequence for every permit.

Professional Design

Utah separately regulates architects and engineers and specifies when licensed professionals must seal work they prepare. Project-specific exemptions and scope still matter, so do not assume that every permit requires an architect or engineer.
