Building Permits in Kent

Kent's Permit Center processes permits electronically through the City's Permit Portal.

Current codes

Washington's current State Building Code uses the 2021 IBC, IRC, IMC, IFC, Uniform Plumbing Code and Washington State Energy Code, with state amendments, effective March 15, 2024. Kent may apply local amendments and development regulations in addition to the state minimums.

When permits are required

Kent states that permits are required for most construction, alteration and repair work, including changes to occupancy, structure or living space; demolition; and additions, repairs or removal of regulated electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing systems.

The City's published exemptions include one-story detached accessory structures up to 120 square feet for non-residential use and 200 square feet for residential use, subject to the listed conditions. Work exempt from a permit must still comply with applicable codes.

Process, fees and timing

Most permits require intake and formal review, and all permits are processed electronically. The City does not support a single universal review-time or fee estimate for all building permits, so none is supplied here.
