Building Permits in Renton

Renton's Permit Services administers building permits and inspections and provides the City's online permit portal (CASSP).

Codes and permit requirements

Renton operates under the Washington State Building Code with local amendments. The statewide 2021 code cycle became effective March 15, 2024. Applicants should also check Renton's current local amendments and the separately administered electrical-code requirements before filing.

Whether a permit is required depends on the work and the adopted code. This page does not copy exemption thresholds from another Washington city.

Inspections, occupancy and fees

Renton allows inspections to be scheduled online or by the City's permit-specific phone lines. Requests may be scheduled as late as 11:59 p.m. the day before the requested inspection; the City does not promise an advance time window. Required inspections depend on the approved permit.

Renton publishes a current fee schedule rather than one universal permit price. Certificate-of-occupancy requirements depend on occupancy and project scope.
